In 2024, Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction spent $691,835 on its men’s basketball teams, falling $666,546 short of the state average expenditure of $1,358,381, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

This amount accounted for 4.8% of the university’s total athletic expenditures in 2024.

Since 2010, Colorado Mesa University’s overall spending on sports has increased by 180.8%.

Basketball is one of the most popular college sports in the United States alongside football, with major NCAA programs drawing fan support and television audiences that can rival those of the NBA. Tournaments such as March Madness attract millions of viewers each year.

College athletics has entered a new era of athlete compensation after a federal settlement allowed schools to directly share revenue with players for the first time.
