CMU Stages at Colorado Mesa University will host two film screenings in April at the Asteria Theatre as part of its Reaching for the Stars series. The event aims to support the Reaching for the Stars Cultural Enrichment Program and Endowed Fund, which helps the Department of Theatre Arts continue its productions and provide ticket donations to local youth.
The first screening, “Apollo 13,” is scheduled for April 7 at 7 p.m. The film recounts the events of the 1970 lunar mission that experienced a critical explosion in space, threatening the lives of astronauts and prompting Mission Control to work urgently on a rescue plan. The story is based on real events.
The second film, “Guardians of the Galaxy,” will be shown on April 14 at 7 p.m. This movie follows a group of cosmic outlaws who must stop an interstellar villain from using a powerful orb to control the universe.
The Reaching for the Stars initiative supports CMU’s Department of Theatre Arts by providing comprehensive education for students and helping them prepare for professional theatrical work. Additionally, it works to expand access to live theatre by offering tickets to Grand Valley students, especially those from low-income families in Mesa County. The program seeks to ensure that all children and teens in western Colorado have an opportunity to attend live theatre performances before graduating high school.
Events in this series also feature guest speakers such as Neil deGrasse Tyson, aiming to inspire curiosity about science and foster community engagement. Proceeds from ticket sales go directly into supporting future programming through the Endowed Fund.
