Mavs Take Over the Mountain, an annual event organized by Colorado Mesa University (CMU), will return to Powderhorn Mountain Resort on Saturday, January 31. The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is open to CMU students and alumni.
Gabe Simon, Manager of Student Life Operations at CMU, described the event as a highlight for the university community. “Mavs Take Over the Mountain is one of my favorite CMU traditions because it shows just how powerful the Mavily truly is,” Simon said. “Whether it’s a student experiencing Powderhorn for the first time or a seasoned regular, it’s an event that shows we are more than what you see on campus.”
During the day, participants will have access to discounted lift tickets and can take advantage of a $50 learn-to-ski or board package. Buses will be available at the Outdoor Program to transport students who do not have vehicles, making it easier for everyone to attend.
Music will be provided by student DJs on the deck outside the main lodge, with KMSA continuing entertainment at the top of the mountain. Attendees can also look forward to swag bags hidden across Powderhorn and an annual beanie giveaway.
Simon emphasized the sense of community fostered by this tradition: “Seeing your friends and making new friends is what makes it all worth it to me,” he said. “Powderhorn is such a gem to the community but seeing the extra Maverick flair Mavs Take Over the Mountain brings to the day warms my heart.”
The event aims to strengthen connections among students and alumni while celebrating school spirit in a setting outside campus life.
