Colorado Mesa University (CMU) has announced the return of its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program for the 2026 tax season. The initiative provides free, IRS-certified tax preparation services to eligible members of the local community.

The VITA program is a nationwide effort overseen by the Internal Revenue Service and is implemented locally through partnerships with community organizations. At CMU, the program is managed by accounting faculty and supported by students, faculty volunteers, and certified public accountants. Additional support comes from non-accounting faculty and student volunteers who assist with client intake, evaluation, and translation services.

Participation in CMU’s VITA program increased significantly last year, with a reported 150% rise compared to the previous season. The average refund for taxpayers using this service was in the thousands of dollars.

In addition to serving the community, the VITA program gives students practical experience as they prepare for careers in accounting and related fields. Students work directly with clients under professional supervision throughout tax season.

“I think programs like VITA are very important for everyone involved. It’s a great way for volunteers or students to get hands-on experience working with clients and doing tax returns. It’s also a great resource for the community, as well,” said Alleepra Stutzman, president of the CMU Accounting Club. “Everyone needs their taxes done, so being able to offer a free service and help the community is very rewarding.”

Stutzman added that volunteering through VITA provides both learning opportunities and a chance to give back: “I volunteered last year for VITA, and we got to help so many people. It is rewarding because we are not only getting a great opportunity to learn, but to be able to give back while we do is priceless,” Stutzman said. “It has made me excited for the tax season this year because I know we are going to be able to help so many people.”

All volunteers at CMU’s VITA site complete IRS training and certification requirements. Each tax return undergoes a quality review before filing in order to ensure accuracy, compliance, and confidentiality.

The free tax preparation services will be available on campus through April 11 on the second floor of Dominguez Hall. Community members can call 970.248.1395 for more information or to make an appointment.
