City of Grand Junction issued the following announcement on Aug. 31.
The City’s Utilities Department is replacing lead service lines along 7th Street between Grand & Hill Avenues. Service lines are the pipes that connect the water main under the street to the building plumbing. There is a total of 8 service lines that are being replaced along 7th Street. Motorists traveling along 7th Street can expect lane closures either north bound or south bound throughout the week and short delays can be expected. The project is anticipated to be completed on Friday, September 4th.
This work is part of a proactive program that the City initiated to replace lead service lines in the City’s distribution system. City crews have been testing areas around water meters to visually inspect the service lines to determine if the pipes are made of lead. So far this year, City crews tested about 130 locations. Typically, lead pipes are associated with older homes in our community. The portion of the service line from the water meter to the water main under the street is part of the public system and is the responsibility of the City. The portion of the service line from the water meter to the building is the responsibility of the homeowner. If City crews identify a lead service line on the homeowner’s side, the City will send a letter to notify the homeowner and explain the replacement process. For income-eligible residents, grant funding is available through a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to help pay for private service line replacements. For residents that do not qualify, the City can coordinate replacement of their private service lines with City work to reduce costs to the homeowner.
Providing customers with safe, reliable water is of utmost importance to the City. The City treats and tests water to ensure that it is lead-free when it leaves the treatment plant and travels through the water mains. The City also monitor samples of tap water from a representative group of homes for lead. Test results have been below EPA health-based action levels. The City offers free assessment and water testing to all customers that have concerns about water quality.
