City of Grand Junction issued the following announcement on Sept. 16.
The City of Grand Junction is continuing work on the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space (PROS) Master Plan, which will provide clear direction for parks and recreation services, facilities, and amenities for the next 5-8 years. An important part of the process is citizen and stakeholder input, and a survey is now circulating, which will be used to assess needs in the community.
At the end of August, a statistically valid survey was mailed to 6,000 randomly selected Grand Junction households. This random selection ensures the results are representative of the Grand Junction community. Those who received the survey are encouraged to complete it and mail it back. From September 14 through October 2, residents that did not receive the survey through mail are invited to participate in an open-link online survey. The survey will take approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. The survey link can be found at www.gjparksandrecreationplan.com or on the city’s website.
The PROS Master Plan kicked off in May 2020 and is now in the middle of the information gathering stage – collecting an inventory of assets, completing a level of service analysis, and collecting feedback through the survey. The final plan is scheduled to be completed by the end of this calendar year. Meaningful community participation is the driving force in the Master Planning effort. Along with the surveys, the City is collecting feedback through various methods including public input from focus groups, community meetings, engagement with City Council and staff, and regular interaction with a City Council appointed PROS Master Plan Advisory Committee. The City of Grand Junction greatly values all feedback and hopes to see many residents participate in the Master Plan.
A $56,250 Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) grant was secured in mid-2019, which is paying for about half the cost of the PROS Master Plan. Given the grant, the Plan must be completed within two years, which is by the middle of 2021. The Plan includes completing a feasibility study and concept designs for the most needed and highest priority indoor and outdoor recreation facilities. The City of Grand Junction last completed a PROS Master Plan in 2001.
