CITY OF GRAND JUNCTION: Carson Lake Dam Rehabilitation

Announcement

City of Grand Junction issued the following announcement on Sept. 24.

Carson Lake (also known as Hogchute Reservoir) is part of the City of Grand Junction’s water supply network. The Carson Lake dam was reclassified as a High Hazard Dam in 2015 due to development occurring in the lower Kannah Creek basin. Although there are no capacity restrictions placed on the dam nor any critical safety issues identified at the present time, a dam safety evaluation has been completed and maintenance projects will be implemented beginning early summer of 2021. These upgrades are proactive measures and preventative maintenance to preserve the life of the dam.

In order to facilitate a prompt start next summer, National Forest Service Road #108 between Land’s End Road and Carson Lake will be closed to make necessary improvements in advance of the project beginning Monday, September 28 for approximately two weeks. The timing of this closure is intended to minimize impacts to campers and hunters.

These improvements are needed to accommodate the heavy construction traffic that will use the road next summer to perform safety improvements and outlet structure upgrades to the reservoir.  This road project is a collaborative effort between the US Forest Service and the City.
